Day 4 – Kimolos & more plotting & scheming

Day 4 and a new island, Kimolos, just to the east of Milos with one village and a population of 500. We planned to go to the main port of Psathi, but it was very unclear from the pilot guide whether this was viable. It seemed to suggest there’s not much quayside and not clear if anchoring in the harbour would be viable.

So on the way Bill and I swung past an alternative anchorage North of Psathi called Prasonisi which looked really nice, but had no taverna.

For sailing chums it turns out there is very little quayside to park and the harbour is tiny and shallow. So we decided against it and just as we left a massive ferry, as big as the harbour, rocked up and parked on the outside of the harbour. Good decision not to stay.

Prasonisi is beautiful, turquoise water, a lovely beach and a beach bar. The others decided to get a taxi into town but Ellison and I stayed on board Baby and waited for the stars to appear. Almost no light pollution, it was worth the wait. A couple of piccies below.

So day 5 tomorrow and we’re already as far south as Folegandros and only 30 miles or so from Santorini. This is the second year I’ve called the blog to Thira and back (the Greek name for the Santorini), the big question is will we make it. Sadly the answer is still no.

Thira is tough for cruising yachts, only one marina and no other anchorages. There is an anchorage on an adjacent island, but pretty open and it would mean a ferry ride to Thira. Turns out the marina isn’t really a marina and not for visiting yachts (full of trip and fishing boats). And it’s never dredged deeper than 1.8 – 2.0 meters, so we probably wouldn’t get in anyway. So we’re giving Thira a miss, Folegandros will be as far south the we’ll go.

Instead we’ll go East from here towards the islands around Naxos, maybe spend a night in IOS (we need water and provisions) then onto Paros. The weather will no doubt influence things, it might get a bit windy at the weekend.

Today as I write this it’s pretty much perfect, we’re 50 degrees off the wind with 10 knots apparent, doing 5 knots.
